Banner Ad Blueprint Program Sneak Peek
Like I said this is going to be more than a lame review site. The following is a sneak peek of the first few modules
of this amazing program
If you like what you read then go for it
Module 1
Getting Started
We “practice” affiliate marketing (advertising other people’s stuff AKA being affiliated with their
company)with banners. We “implement” Internet marketing strategies to bring visitors to people’s stuff
(products/services)
We’re just doing a different way of advertising, and I think one of the most effective ways to do
advertising – advertising online. You’re combining affiliate marketing with Internet marketing
strategies big companies use.
Affiliate Networks
Whether you are self-employed or you’re incorporated (as an Inc., LLC, LTD., etc.), you want to
make sure that you sign up with different affiliate networks to find products and services to
promote.
The first kind you want to sign up with is CPA networks. There are also “cost per sale” networks
like Clickbank where you only get paid when someone makes a purchase, and networks like
Commission Junction and LinkShare that have a mix of both types of offers.
When you promote CPA offers, you get paid for generating leads or sales (email submits, credit
reports, ringtones, etc.) The bottom line is that you can use the strategies revealed in Banner Ad
Blueprint to drive high-converting traffic to any of the different varieties of offers hosted by
these networks.
Module 2
Market Research
The first question every marketer starts out with is, what to promote?
The short answer is that you want to start out promoting products and services that are already
popular, such as products that are being actively advertised on TV (just two current examples at
time of writing are Guitar Hero and CreditReport.com, both of which have CPA offers available
for promotion on the networks listed above).
You also want to promote offers that already have a high EPC (Earnings Per Click). These tend
to be the offers that are already making affiliates the most money, and you can find this
information out by contacting your affiliate manager by phone, IM or email.
(EPC is calculated very simply – the network divides the total payout generated by advertisers
for that offer by the number of clicks it took to acquire the leads. These network EPC numbers
may not exactly match your own individual numbers, since they represent a broad cross-section
of affiliates using different promotion methods, but they are very useful as general indicators of
how profitable and offer really is).
More broadly, you want to focus on markets that are always “in demand” like weight loss, or that
are predictably in demand at a certain time of year like Halloween, Valentine’s Day or Mother’s
Day.
Once you have figured out which offers to promote, you want to decide if you are going to direct
link or create your own landing page.
As Seen on TV
As mentioned above, promoting products that consumers are routinely exposed to on television
is one of the best strategies for finding popular offers. Go to AsSeenOnTV.com, and you can
check CPA networks to see if they have offers that match the products listed on the site. Your
other option is to directly sign up for the As Seen On TV affiliate program.
High EPC Offers
On some CPA networks (works great with Banner Ads), like MaxBounty and Neverblue, you can clearly see the EPC data
associated with each offer right in the offer listings. You can then sort the offers to find the ones
with the highest EPC. You can also run a search to find offers matching a particular topic like
ring tones or baby products and then sort them to find the highest-performing offers.
Finding Profitable Niches With Google & Market Samurai
If you want to promote something related to (for example) the weight loss market, you can
search for “weight loss” using the Google keyword tool and see immediately that there are a
huge number of searches for keywords related to that market.
You can also use the free Google keyword tool to find keywords related to an individual website.
This level of data is available to anyone for free, whether or not you have an Adwords account.
Just search for “Google keyword tool.”
If you use Market Samurai, however, you can get access to Google keyword data with additional
market-research information such as a keyword’s OCI score (a metric developed by Microsoft to
measure a keyword’s “commercial intent”) and Adwords Value ( the total daily value of traffic a
top-ranked Adwords advertiser would receive).
Seasonal Promotions
United States holidays like Valentine’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day, etc. can be extremely
profitable marketing opportunities, and affiliate networks will often roll out holiday-themed
offers to match. Whenever a holiday is coming up, be sure to be prepared at least two weeks to
one month in advance to make sure you are in the best possible position to promote related
offers.
Module 3
Direct Linking vs. Landing Pages
What is going to be more profitable – direct-linking to an offer or using your own landing page?
It depends. For any campaign you are promoting, first think about the pros and cons of each of
these strategies – literally get out a piece of paper and write them down.
Direct Linking
With direct linking, there is no “middle man” – clicking on your ad brings the customer directly
to the merchant’s site. If the offer is extremely popular (“as seen on TV” products, etc.), direct
linking with banner ads can be a very profitable strategy. You also want to consider the payout –
generally lower-paying offers like credit reports, game downloads, or dating tend to work well
with direct linking.
If you browse popular, high-traffic websites, you can find a lot of banners that direct-link to
offers, and that can also be a source of inspiration on what kinds of offers are currently working
well for direct-linking advertisers.
Landing Pages
Landing pages tend to work well with higher-paying ($30 or more) offers, since these offers may
require a bit more work to convince the prospect to buy (or to give out more information than
would normally be required for lower-paying offers).
This also applies to offers that may provoke a higher level of buyer skepticism, such as teethwhitening
and weight-loss offers. In these types of markets, people want to read a bit more
before making a buying decision, and they can increase conversions dramatically (75% or more).
Just make sure that if you do build a landing page that it is in compliance with FTC regulations
(there is a good deal of information available online on this topic, but you should of course
consult a qualified attorney if you have questions about this topic).
There are different types of landing pages, including “review sites”, “story blogs” and “squeeze
pages” (which include a redirect to the offer after the prospect opts in).
Always test different versions of a landing page – preferably three different versions with
different copy, different calls to action, different graphics, etc. – especially if you are “getting
creative” rather than using a template of some kind that is already proven.
Make sure that you have multimedia of some kind on your landing page – banners and stock
photos are good, and videos, if you can find them or make them, work very well.
Landing Page Copy Essentials
You need to engage the user by convincing them to keep reading, without coming across as a
“salesman.” Be sincere, but straightforward at the same time. Telling a story in your landing page
copy can help. Strong headlines are essential, and you should also put a closely related image
along with summary text with one affiliate link up top to catch “fast clickers” who may only read
a very small amount and then click away.
Use “call to action” words throughout your copy, such as “change your life today,” “make money
in your sleep” or “start feeling like a new you,” without being corny, and use similar phrases for
your link anchor text rather than simply writing “click here.”
Make sure your landing page stands out, looks professional, but also conveys valuable
information. Remember: Using split-testing software (Google Website Optimizer is free), as well
as ClickTale.com (which allows you to watch your visitors’ behavior on your site with real-time
videos and heat maps) will nearly always allow you to improve your conversion rates.
ClickTale, in particular, is extremely effective at showing you what is working (or not) on your
landing pages, and you can get a free trial account to try it out.
Click-Through Rate
From any landing page, you should try to make sure that you have at least a 30% click-through
rate (CTR) to the offer, since in general the more targeted clicks to the offer, the more money you
will make.
